Long Term Car Hire
Long-term car rentals are the best way to experience Rwanda and Uganda, two of East Africa’s finest self-drive destinations. Renting for 14 days or more, and especially for 30 days or longer, gives you lower daily rates, flexible itineraries, and the freedom to stay as long as you like wherever you like. Rwanda is compact and easy to navigate, with well-paved roads and strict traffic enforcement. Short drives connect Kigali, Volcanoes National Park, Lake Kivu, and Akagera National Park, so you can cover a lot of ground without long days behind the wheel. Uganda is larger and more varied. Murchison Falls, Queen Elizabeth, Kibale, Bwindi, Lake Mburo, and Kidepo are all reachable by road, though some routes involve rough tracks that call for a sturdier vehicle and a bit of patience. Combine the two countries and you have a classic loop of 2 to 4 weeks, with gorillas, savannah wildlife, crater lakes, and rainforest all within reach of one rental car.

FAQ
Yes, with the rental company’s written approval, cross-border insurance (COMESA Yellow Card) and the correct border paperwork. Fees apply and not every company allows it, so ask when booking
For Rwanda’s paved roads and main Ugandan highways, an SUV like a RAV4 is enough. For national park tracks, especially in rainy season or in places like Kidepo and the Bwindi area, a high-clearance 4×4 is strongly recommended.
Generally yes, with sensible precautions. The main risks are road conditions, unpredictable traffic (motorbikes, trucks) and driving after dark. Avoid night driving, keep valuables out of sight and follow local speed limits.
A valid driving licence from your home country, an International Driving Permit (recommended), your passport and a credit card for the deposit. Cross-border trips require extra documents from the rental company.
Standard rentals include third-party cover and a CDW with an excess. Tyres, windscreens, underbody damage, river crossings and off-road damage are often excluded. Ask about Super CDW or zero-excess options and read the exclusions before signing
Road Conditions and Driving Tips
Rwanda: Roads are excellent and well maintained. Traffic police and speed cameras are widespread, with speed limits strictly enforced (commonly 60 km/h on main roads outside towns, lower in towns). Motorbike taxis (motos) are numerous, so stay alert. Plastic bags are banned, so don’t bring them in.
Uganda: Main highways are mostly paved but congested, and Kampala traffic can be intense. Park roads and rural routes may be rough, especially in the rainy seasons (March to May and October to November). Expect potholes, speed bumps, boda-boda motorbikes and occasional livestock on the road. Police checkpoints are common and usually routine.
General advice: Avoid driving at night. Carry a physical map or offline maps, a spare tyre in good condition, a jack and a tyre repair kit. Keep a stock of cash for fuel in remote areas, and fill up whenever you can in rural regions.

These are the best options for self drive in Rwanda with limited off road driving. For long term rental of any of these SUVs on monthly or annual - request for a quotation.

Types of Rental Arrangements
Self-drive rental: You collect a vehicle, usually in Kigali or Entebbe/Kampala, and drive yourself. This is the cheapest option and the one most visitors mean by “self-drive.”
Chauffeur-driven rental: A driver comes with the vehicle. This costs more but suits travellers who want local knowledge or are nervous about the roads. Some companies let you switch between the two.
Fully equipped camping setups: Some Ugandan operators rent 4x4s with rooftop tents, fridges, camping gear and recovery equipment, which suits trips over a month.
Vehicles and Typical Costs
For national park roads, a high-clearance 4×4 is strongly recommended:
- Toyota RAV4 or similar compact SUV: fine for Rwanda and main Ugandan routes, with the lowest rates.
- Toyota Land Cruiser Prado or Land Cruiser 70/Hilux: the standard safari choice, with better clearance and reliability on muddy or rocky tracks, such as in the Bwindi area or Kidepo.
As rough, indicative figures, a basic SUV may run around US$45 to 70 per day and a safari-ready 4×4 around US$70 to 130 per day, with discounts of 10 to 30 percent for rentals over 3 to 4 weeks. Rates change by season, so treat these as ballpark numbers and confirm them with quotes. Peak seasons are June to September and December to February.
