Self-Drive from Kigali
Self-Drive Requirements and FAQ
Self-driving in Rwanda is one of the easiest ways to explore the country at your own pace, from the hills around Kigali to Lake Kivu and Volcanoes National Park. This page covers what you need before you collect your vehicle, along with answers to the questions we hear most often.
Self-Drive Requirements
To rent a vehicle with Auto rental Rwanda, every driver must meet the following requirements at pickup:
- A valid driving licence that has been held for at least [number] years and is not expired.
- A licence written in English or French, or an International Driving Permit (IDP) that accompanies your original licence.
- A passport or national ID that matches the name on the licence and rental agreement.
- A credit card in the main driver’s name for the security deposit. Debit cards and cash are generally not accepted for deposits.
- Minimum age and driving experience, as described in the age section below.
Every driver named on the rental agreement must present these documents. Additional drivers must be registered at the time of booking or at the counter, and they are subject to the same requirements.
Yes, if your licence is valid, in good condition, and written in English or French. If it uses a different alphabet, such as Arabic, Cyrillic, or Chinese characters, you will need an IDP alongside it.
You will need an IDP issued in your home country before you travel. The IDP is a translation of your licence and must be carried with the original at all times.
Only full, unrestricted licences are accepted. Provisional, learner, or probationary licences will not be accepted for rental.
Not always. An IDP is required only when your licence is not written in English or French. Even so, many travellers carry one as a clear, widely recognised translation, and it is inexpensive to obtain.
IDPs are issued by automobile associations in your home country, such as the AA, AAA, or the national motoring body in your country. Permits are valid only when issued alongside a valid national licence, and they expire after a set period, usually one year. Please obtain yours before you leave home, because they are generally not issued once you are in Rwanda.
Possibly. Police checkpoints are common across Rwanda, and officers may ask to see your licence, passport, and rental documents. Keep everything together in the vehicle.
The deposit depends on the vehicle category and the level of insurance you choose. Typical deposits range from $400 for compact cars to $100 for 4x4s and larger vehicles. A higher-level excess reduction usually lowers the deposit.
We place a per-authorization hold on the credit card in the main driver’s name. The hold is not a charge. The funds are released after the vehicle is returned in the agreed condition and all invoices are settled. Release times depend on your bank, and can take 3 business days.
It may be used toward repair costs, fuel shortfalls, late fees, or traffic fines that are charged to the vehicle. We will provide an itemised statement explaining any deductions.
No. Deposits must be held on a credit card in the main driver’s name. Cash may be accepted for rental fees in some cases, but not for the deposit.
Every rental includes third-party liability insurance, which is required by Rwandan law. Most rentals also include a Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) with an excess, which is the amount you pay toward damage before the insurer covers the rest. Theft protection is included in most packages.
The excess is the maximum amount you are responsible for in the event of an accident or theft. Extra protection packages, sometimes called super CDW or excess reduction, lower this amount. They cost a daily fee and typically reduce the deposit as well.
Contact us immediately, even for minor incidents. Do not admit fault or sign any statement without our approval. Obtain a police report if required, and take photos of the vehicle and the scene. Failure to report an accident promptly may void your insurance.
Driving Tips for Rwanda
Rwanda drives on the right side of the road. Speed limits are strictly enforced, and speed cameras are used in and around Kigali. Seatbelts are mandatory for all occupants. Using a mobile phone while driving is prohibited unless you use a hands-free system. Rwanda has very strict drink-driving rules, so we recommend that you do not drink any alcohol before driving. Roads outside the main routes can be steep, winding, and unpaved, so drive slowly and be prepared for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcycle taxis, known locally as moto-taxis.
